A chainsaw is a movable, mechanical and motorized saw. It is used in logging activities like felling, limbing, and bucking. Chainsaws started around the 1830's. Bernard Heine, a German orthopedist, was the known inventor of chainsaw.

Chainsaw is classified as a power tool. It is a dangerous machine if mishandled. Users must be fully knowledgeable of the machine before trying to use it. Know the parts and functions of each for your safety.

A chainsaw has the following parts:

o Chain catcher - this is a plastic or metal guard used to prevent a broken or derailed saw chain from hitting the operator.
o Fly Wheel - a weighted wheel which controls the engine speed and assists in cooling the engine.
o Clutch - it is the connector that controls the driving part of a saw
o Decompression valve - this allows easier starting by releasing saw compression
o Anti-vibration handle system - this relieves stress to the operator's hand, arms and joints.
o Hand Guard -plastic shield that protects the hands from kickback.
o Muffler - reduces engine noise.
o Chain brake - stops the chain when kickback happens to prevent injury.
o Throttle - regulates RPMs by increasing or decreasing the volume of fuel to the cylinders.
o Throttle interlock - this is a locking mechanism that prevents the throttle from activating while the interlock is pressed

There are a lot of chainsaw manufacturers in the market. Some of them are:

- Stihl
- Husqvarna
- Homelite
- Echo
- Jonsered
- Pioneer
- Makita
- Husky
- Ryobi
- BlackDecker
- Mcculloch
- Poutan
- Craftsman
- Remington
- John Deere
- Shindaiwa
- Partner

Despite so many competitors, Stihl remains one of the world's best manufacturers of chainsaws. Their products are versatile to hobbyists and professionals. Their wide selection of chainsaws suits the different needs of farmers, professional loggers, landscapers, construction crews and fire departments.

Popular Models of Stihl

MS 180 C-B has a fast engine and is easy to use. It has a STIHL Quickstop inertial chain break and an anti-vibration system. The standard chain adjuster is the Stihl's Quick Chain Adjuster (B).

Getting To Know Chainsaw Manufacturing's Lesser Lights

!±8± Getting To Know Chainsaw Manufacturing's Lesser Lights

While Husqvarna and Stihl have long been regarded the giants of the chainsaws world, lesser known brands such as Jonsered, Echo, Poulan and McCullogh have gradually been chipping away at their dominance. Better technology and growth in the semi professional use of chainsaws have seen more market opportunities open up for the lesser lights.

This report will offer a brief insight into the world of the smaller chainsaws manufacturer and hopefully offer you, the user, more choice before you decide to buy.

Jonsered

Jonsered is part of the Electrolux group of companies. It is no minnow. It first emerged as a possible player in the chainsaw industry in 1954 when it produced a prototype for what we know today as a one operator saw. It was a revolutionary move over 50 years ago and not many people realise chainsaws were machine monsters back then and had to be operated by at least two people.

Now servicing both the professional and non professional, Jonsered is always on the cutting edge of technology. For example, their turbo chainsaw range have provided users with an easier to start machine and enhanced safety features. They have been around a long time, in fact since the 1880's as a power tool processor and during the last half century, have been silently "snapping at the heels" of the major players in the chainsaw industry.

Echo

As with most Japanese produced products, Echo chainsaws have all the trademark dependability and performance reliability we've come to expect. Echo is the largest chainsaw manufacturer in Japan and has made massive inroads on the world wide stage during the past three decades.

It was once stated Echo produces just about the most appreciated chainsaw on the market. Why? Because their no fuss approach has seen it's machines do what they were designed to do... cut. Their best known feature is their enormous power to size ratio. An excellent example of this is the marvellous CS - 440. Woodcutters have described it as dynamite in a small package...an apt description.

Poulan

Another under the Electrolux group, the Poulan name is synonomous with power tools. Once independently owned and set up by one of the chainsaw industy's pioneers, Claude Poulan, the brand name has come a long way during the past 60 years. It has an interesting history, in fact, it's known Claude Poulan came up with the idea of a smaller power-driven chainsaw after watching prisoners fumble around with the massive machines of the early years during service in World War 2. In fact, his idea to replace the pry-pole operator virtually caused a revolution in the forestry industry.

Poulan often shares its technologies with Husqvarna as part of the Electrolux banner and have developed a very loyal band of supporters. New improvements which have included the SuperClean system have earnt Poulan a strong reputation for producing durable chainsaws.

McCullough And Homelite

Mccullough and Homelite are always highly spoken of in the chainsaw industry. McCullough has been providing woodcutters with excellent chainsaw products for more than 60 years. They specialise in both the gas and electric machines as well as lightweight and heavy duty chainsaws.

Homelite has been around since 1921. It has built a reputation for being innovative and has a long list of achievements in close to 90 years, to back up their claims. In fact, it was "dabbling" in electric chainsaws as far back as the mid 1940's. Homelite has been a major player in producing environmentally safe machine technology.

While Husqvarna and Stihl will be hard to "knock off their perch" as the frontrunners in chainsaw manufacturers, the above mentioned brands are just some which provide consumers with buying options.

STIHL Chainsaws Buying Guide

!±8± STIHL Chainsaws Buying Guide

If you've been looking at different chainsaws, chances are pretty good you've come across brand names like Craftsman, Husqvarna, and STIHL. All good chains saws, and all aiming for different consumers. The Husqvarna line definitely targets the bigger industrial sized jobs, but they do also produce machines that work well for the average home owner / casual chainsaw user.

The Craftsman chainsaws (sometimes manufactured by Poulan), are more for the casual user, or maybe as a backup saw. They also make a good alternative to lugging around a big saw, if you don't want to drag your hefty STIHL or Husky off to the job site. Homelite also makes smaller chainsaws, that would be good for cutting firewood, and taking down smaller trees. Other manufacturers to consider are Jonsered, and Echo. Their not nearly as well known, but do fill a niche.

Husqvarna, and STIHL, do own the majority of the market however, with an estimated eighty percent of the market share. Husqvarna holds a slight lead over second place STIHL. If your in the business of farming, growing, or chopping down trees, than chances your going to go for the Swedish designed and built STIHL, or the German manufactured STIHL.

STIHL has been producing chainsaws for about 70 or so years, and both their 250CBE and 180 models are amongst the most popular. THE 250CBE is more for heavy duty power users, where as the 180 is lighter, but provides great value for the money. The nice thing about STIHL saws, is they won't wear you down and beat you up. You'll be able to use them for longer stretches, and get more work down.

Basic Chainsaw Maintenance

!±8± Basic Chainsaw Maintenance

There are not too many outdoor tools more versatile than the chainsaw. From cutting firewood to solid trees;from a delicate to a heavy duty job or whether you use a Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo or Jonsered machine, the trusty chainsaw will perform the job admirably.

Don't be fooled by it's apparent power and effectiveness though. Truth be known, a chainsaw is like a finely tuned athlete;it needs proper but basic maintenance and in return, it will provide you with years of winning performance.

One of the most common areas inexperienced and semi professionals tend to overlook is the chain oiling system. Most chainsaws have either an automatic or manual oiling system and performing regular checks will save you plenty in the long run.

Testing the oiling system is simple and quite straightforward. To perform a check;make sure the oil reservoir is full, hold the saw about 3 inches above a piece of paper(preferably white) and revv the saw a few times. By depressing the oil lever while the saw is revving, you should notice a light oil mist spraying onto the paper. If not, then you may have problems.

There are several steps you can take to locate the source of the problem. For instance, dust may have built up in the oil outlets. Your manual should highlight exactly where those oil outlets are located. They'll require careful cleaning.

Likewise, removing the chain and checking the guide bar for cleanliness is also recommended. Without regular checking of the oil outlets dust and oil build up can "cake" leading to performance restriction.

After performing and correcting these problems and you are still experiencing difficulties, then it's time to consider having your chainsaw looked at by an expert.

As stated earlier, chainsaws require basic maintenance but if performed, you'll get years of regular use and service from them.
